What is AI?

What is AI?

Artificial intelligence is when computer programs are designed to imitate the human brain. AI involves programs that learn new things based on their previous experiences, understand languages, recognise objects in images, and many other things.

Today we can find artificial intelligence almost everywhere - from devices like toy robots and mobile applications, to machines in the factories that produce them. For AI to be called AI, it must have some intelligent behaviour. AI programs are usually only good at very specific tasks. For example, an AI program can be very good at playing chess, but the same program would not be very good at translating languages.

There is a lot left to learn about AI, and we can only speculate about what will be the next big breakthrough!

Humanoid robots

Building an artificial human has attracted inventors and researchers for hundreds of years. A well-known example is Leonardo da Vinci's Jack from 1498.

Many research groups around the world are working to develop new versions of humanoid robots. Often, each robot specializes in a specific area, such as body movements, hand functions, behaviours, learning, facial expressions, speech, or something else.

While working to make better robots, researchers are learning more about how the human body and brain work. That way, theirs research will be useful for developing smart aids such as hand prostheses.

In the movie, you see humanoid robots that have been developed with advanced features.
